Sounds rarely live alone

Drilling a single sound in isolation, like a vowel or a consonant, often does not transfer to real speech, because pronunciation problems usually show up in connected speech: word stress, linking between words, and sentence rhythm. If people frequently ask you to repeat yourself, the issue is often rhythm and stress rather than any individual sound.

Prioritise word stress over accent

In many languages, misplaced word stress causes more comprehension problems than an accented vowel. A word like 'record' changes meaning between noun and verb depending on stress in English, and misplacing stress on a longer professional word can make it briefly unrecognisable to a listener, even if every individual sound is close to correct. Learning the stress pattern of your frequently used vocabulary is often higher value than chasing a native-like accent.

Shadow short clips, not long lectures

Shadowing, repeating audio immediately after or alongside a speaker, works best with short clips of 10 to 20 seconds that you can loop several times. Long recordings make it hard to notice specific rhythm and intonation patterns because your attention shifts to content. Choose clips close to your professional context, such as recorded meetings, interviews, or short news segments in your field.

Record yourself before comparing to a model

It is tempting to listen to a native model and immediately try to copy it, but recording your own attempt first, then comparing the two, reveals more specific differences. Notice where your recording differs in stress placement, pauses, or pitch movement rather than making a vague overall judgement of 'accent'. Specific comparisons produce more useful practice targets.

Practise the words you actually say

General pronunciation courses often cover vocabulary you rarely use. Pronunciation practice is more efficient when it focuses on words and phrases from your own meetings, presentations, and documents, since those are the words a mispronunciation will actually affect.
